Midway In Summer

Dear Friends of Care of Creation,

As we mark the midway point in our North American summer, I trust that for those of you for whom this is summer time you are finding some rest, some change of pace and perhaps opportunities to experience God’s great world in new and refreshing ways. For me, I’ve had the opportunity to go sailing a number of times, thanks to a generous Father’s Day gift from all of my children. For me, few experiences can match the unique combination of exhilaration, fear and accomplishment of keeping a small sailboat upright in a stiff breeze on a glorious summer day, and knowing through it all that I am in the presence of the God who made all this and who shows himself through it to those who can see…

Finances – you can help – and you can pray!

Thank you for your continued support of our creation-care efforts. We do appreciate you. For that reason we want to let you know that we’re in the middle of a slump right now, particularly with regard to funding for our US operations. You won’t be surprised to hear that – many organizations experience slowdowns in these months when people’s minds are on other things. In our case – being small and still young – we just don’t have the reserves to cope with inevitable gaps, and since most of our expenses are personnel related, you can figure out what gets cut when the funds are low. Your gift now will make a big difference!

Sorley Family arriving in MN soon…

Craig and Tracy Sorley anchor our work in Kenya. They are coming home with their two sons for a two month time of refreshment and renewal. They’ll be spending most of their time with family – but those of you who are on their support team will, I’m sure, be hearing from them about opportunities that may be available for you to connect during this time.

…and Jan Korbel is about to leave for Kenya

Jan has set a mid-September date to fly to Kenya to join the Care of Creation-Kenya team. Some of you know Jan and have been praying for her – she has some significant fundraising left to do in order to meet this deadline. If you can help, contact her!

Staff and Volunteer Retreat is planned…

Jan’s preparations are just a reminder that God has been bringing more and more people with gifts and passion into our orbit – but it’s been hard to connect people with each other when we’re as spread out as we are. So, we’re taking advantage of the Sorley’s home leave to plan a weekend retreat in September to spend time together talking, praying, and listening to God to hear what he has for us. This will be one of the most important weekends in the history of our young organization up to the present time. Please put September 13-16 on your calendar and pray for us.

Join us at the Dane County Farmer’s Market!

If you are in the Madison WI area you may be aware that the Dane County Farmer’s market recently received an award as the #1 Market in the nation. More than 20,000 people come through every Saturday morning. As an experiment, we’re planning a table display on the NE corner of the Square on three alternate Saturdays – July 28, August 11 and August 25. Come by and say hello to our volunteers!

Ed’s speaking schedule…

The schedule is taking shape for the fall and winter months. Among other events, I will be Abilene TX and Philadelphia PA in October, and western Massachusetts and Florida in November. Some dates are still open – contact me here.

Our Father’s World – still available, still $10 plus shipping!

If you haven’t purchased your copy of my book, Our Father’s World, you can still get a ‘first edition’! I am in the process of revising and updating the text – InterVarsity Press will be releasing the new edition sometime during the winter – but we’re keeping a stock of the original book available until the new one comes out. We understand that a number of groups have used this book quite successfully for small group studies. If you’ve done so, let me know. In fact, if you developed a study outline for the book, I would love to see that to compare with what we’re preparing for the next edition!
Thank you again for your interest and prayers for us as we seek to build an organization that will ‘mobilize the church around the world’ to care for God’s creation!
